Capital of the state of Salzburg, W Austria,
on the river Salzach, in W Austria;
population (1981) 139,400. The city is
dominated by the Hohensalzburg fortress. It
is the seat of an archbishopric founded by St
Boniface about 700 and has a 17th-century
cathedral. Industries include stock rearing,
dairy farming, forestry, and tourism. It is
the birthplace of the composer Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart and an annual music festival
has been held here since 1920.
